This morning at the NACD Directors Summit in the Washington, DC area, the National Association of Corporate Directors released its 33rd annual Blue Ribbon Commission report. PRISM Chair Michael Camuñez served on the 23-member Commission, cochaired by Dorlisa Flur and Jay D. Miller, alongside boardroom leaders, CEOs and governance experts.

Why this report, why now

Boards are spending more time on strategy than ever, yet there is often little shared understanding with management of where strategy ends and execution begins. Long-term plans are now exposed to fast-changing, interconnected variables, and missteps are more immediate, more visible and more costly. Sixty percent of directors ranked oversight of strategy execution as a top priority for their board this year.

The Commission set out to help boards:

  • Draw brighter lines between strategy and execution, and between governance and management

  • Govern strategic pivots without overreach

  • Monitor execution quality and leadership strength under pressure

  • Build board and leadership capacity to operate under uncertainty

Key takeaways

Strategy execution oversight is a top priority. Directors increasingly recognize that how strategy is delivered matters as much as the strategy itself.

More engagement is not always better oversight. The goal is better-directed engagement, not deeper involvement in operations.

Boards need earlier visibility into changing conditions. Tracking whether the assumptions behind a strategy still hold lets boards separate meaningful signals from noise and act before plans stall.

A practical framework: align, monitor, calibrate. The report gives boards a three-part cycle to strengthen execution oversight: align with management on execution, monitor execution, and calibrate the board's engagement as conditions change.

What it means for PRISM members

Michael's seat on the Commission puts an LGBTQ+ director at the center of one of the most influential pieces of governance thinking each year. It reflects what PRISM exists to do: bring diverse perspectives into the conversations that shape how boards work.

We will explore these themes at the PRISM Summit on October 26 in New York, where hot topics in board governance are on the agenda.
